If you use a Mac, the NordVPN native application is the best way to connect to NordVPN servers. We designed it with your needs in mind, giving easy access to features such as Double VPN, Onion over VPN servers, and automated Kill Switch. The app is available in two versions, IKEv2/IPSec and OpenVPN, each using different VPN protocols to connect.
You can find detailed instructions on how to download and install NordVPN on macOS in the following articles:
- IKEv2 application (recommended)
- OpenVPN application (more suitable to use in restricted areas)
What is the difference between the two versions?
- IKEv2
This version of the NordVPN application can be installed directly from the Apple App Store on macOS devices with firmware no older than 10.12. The main benefit of using the IKEv2 app is that it offers the NordLynx protocol. NordLynx aside, the Kill-Switch feature works on a system-wide level, cutting internet access if the VPN connection suddenly disconnects - that way it protects all apps, without terminating them.
- OpenVPN
Although OpenVPN lacks NordLynx, it allows the manipulation of some additional preferences, such as the custom DNS servers. Additionally, when activated, the Kill-Switch terminates separate apps, instead of the whole internet connection. The app can be sideloaded from our website, and it can run on earlier versions of macOS, no older than 10.10.
Tip: Don't forget to use a strong password on your NordVPN account, as it will help you to avoid credential stuffing attacks and will keep your account safe.
As generating and remembering strong and secure passwords is not an easy task, we recommend downloading a free password manager — NordPass. It generates secure passwords for you and stores them safely, letting you avoid time-wasting password resets in the future.
NordPass offers native apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, so you can reach your passwords when and where needed, even offline.
